REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· When it comes to communication, are you a short and sweet and to the point? Or do you tend to give the long version of the story? Give an example.

· In a sentence or less, describe: yourself, your best friend, your spouse, your kids, your passion, your biggest dream, Jesus, your church community. Is this easy or difficult for you? Why?

· Other than the examples in the scriptures above, can you think of a time in the Bible where big truths are summed up in a nutshell?

· Can you think of a “nutshell” truth about life, wok, relationships, etc. that you carry with you each day and try to practice?

· What do you think about the suggestion that Connections is about: Building Relationships That Change Things? In your opinion, does that seem to mesh well with what you know about the story of God and Jesus? What you see at/in Connections?

· We talked about building relationships with God, Other Believers and the World. Which comes easiest for you? Which is tougher/needs more work?

· Is it helpful to be reminded that we’re “building” relationships? Why/Not?

· Have you ever seen a relationship change someone? Explain.

· How have you changed or grown in the past year? In your relationship with God? Other believers? The World?

· Has any “thing” changed for you as a result of being a part of Connections? If so what?

For A Change Week 3- Want to change? You've Got To Get Unwrapped

SCRIPTURES FROM SUNDAY:

John 11:38-44, 12:1-2, 9-11; Romans 6:8-13; Ephesians 4:1b-6, 11-16

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· Name something you are “in process” with. How long have you been working on this? Are you comfortable with things that take a while to unfold- or do you prefer to put your energy into stuff you can complete relatively quickly?

· Lazarus was buried according to the customs of his day wrapped in strips of cloth. Does it strike you funny that Jesus calls Lazarus to come out of the tomb knowing his hands, feet and face were still bound? Why didn’t Jesus just have a couple of people carry Lazarus out of the grave?

· In addition to getting unwrapped from the burial cloths, what else might Lazarus’ recovery process have included after being dead for 4 days? Do you see any parallels for our spiritual growth process?

· Are there any parts of your life where you still feel bound? Where you need strengthening? That you have been offering to other things but want to start offering to God instead? Name them and talk with God/others about them.

· Do you think it is significant that Jesus asked other people to help Lazarus get free of His grave clothes? Who has God sent to help you in your process of discovering new life in Jesus and growing toward maturity? Take a minute offer prayers of thanksgiving for them.

· After some time passes, Jesus stops to have dinner with Lazarus on His way to face His own death in Jerusalem. Why might Jesus have wanted to see Lazarus at that particular time?

· What effects does Lazarus’ resurrection have on those who see him afterward? How do you think Lazarus felt about becoming a target? About helping others start believing in Jesus? Do you think we face the same tension as Jesus’ people today?

· Lazarus was a living billboard for what Jesus can do. Are you? Who is watching your life for signs of God’s love, power and transformation? Who has God placed in your life so that you can help them get unwrapped? Pray for them and for your own witness.

For A Change Week 2- Want to change? It's Going To Be Messy

SCRIPTURES FROM SUNDAY:

John 11:17-39, Colossians 3:9-10, 12-15

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· Name something that is messy or leaves you stinky, but is rewarding/worth it.

· Agree or Disagree- “Most significant change includes steps back as well as steps forward.”

· In your experience, do churches paint a vision for spiritual growth that includes some mess and odor? If not, why not? If so, how is that picture helpful?

· Which are harder for you to deal with- your own messes- or others’? Why?

· Do you identify with Martha’s spiritual inconsistency- professing great faith one moment and acting doubtful a short while later? What has this looked like in your life?

· Do you think it is possible to grow in your relationship with God without ever getting messy and falling short? Can you think of any well-known figure in the Bible (aside from Jesus) who doesn’t stink a bit?

· Fred suggested that Martha reeks of disappointment in John 11. When could the same be said for you? When did you expect God to show up in a certain way at a certain time only to be disappointed?

· What do you think it meant to Mary and Martha to see Jesus break down and cry with them (3x in this chapter)? Have you ever sensed that God is mourning or hurting with you?

· Re-read Colossians 3:12-15. Do you see yourself more as the person extending these qualities to others- or needing them from yourself? Why?

For A Change Week 1- Want to change? You have to die.

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· Think of a time when you experienced a positive change that happened as the result of a loss or disappointment. Was it worth it? Would you have gotten there without the pain?

· Outside of church, where have you heard the word “resurrection”? What kinds of changes is that word usually associated with?

· How do you feel about the idea that Jesus allowed Lazarus to die (and his family to grieve) to bring about transformation for Lazarus and many others?

· What do you think might have changed for Lazarus after he was dead for 4 days and came back to life? Do you think he lived life exactly the same as he had before he died?

· Have you ever tried to do spiritual “kaizen” in your relationship with Jesus- making small tweaks hoping to bring about radical transformation? Has it worked? Do you think it can? Why do you think we want to take this approach?

· As you understand it, why is it so important that we die with Jesus? Have you?

· Is dying with Jesus a 1x thing? An everyday thing? Both? Explain.

· What do you need to “put to death” in your life right now that is leading you away from God? How can you start?

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· This teaching defined grace as “God at work, doing for us what we can’t do for ourselves”. How does that compare to your understanding of grace? Based on this explanation, how have you experienced grace lately?

· Share your thoughts/feelings about the following statements from this teaching: “Grace is the thing that sets our (the Christian) story apart from others (religions).” “When you get grace, it will get you.”

· What do you think the difference is between Louie’s picture of Jesus signing or stamping our cards to get us into heave vs. Jesus becoming our sins and paying for them on the cross?

· Do you think of yourself as being “the righteousness of God” (vs. 21)? Why/why not? How would your life change if you did?

· Do you ever “lose your mind for God” (vs. 13a) when you think about God’s goodness? If so, when? How?

· Have you ever contained your excitement about God and “stayed in your right mind” (vs. 13b) so that your friends who don’t know God’s grace will get it? When/how?

· What do you think about the statement: “If you never live in the tension of being excited about God and yet restraining your excitement for God to help others come close to the cross- then maybe you don’t get grace.”

· Did God use someone like “fruitcake” to show and tell you about His grace? Are you someone’s “fruitcake” right now? If so, what is the “ice cream” you use as a common point of friendship and connection?

· Who do you know who needs grace? Have you been praying for them regularly? If not, will you start?

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· What are you looking forward to most about spring’s arrival? What will you do with the extra hour of daylight in the evening now that Daylight Saving Time is here?

· Agree or disagree & explain: Better questions can take us farther in our relationship with God than good answers.

· Have you ever been exposed to a version of Jesus’ story that stopped with or focused mostly on Jesus dying so that we can go to heaven? If so, explain the context and the way it may have shaped the faith of those who heard it.

· How does today’s suggestion that “Jesus came to open the door to an ‘integrated’ way of living with God” sit with you? Mean to you?

· How often do you think about the Holy Spirit living in you? Of yourself as a temple of God? How might focusing on these realities more change your daily relationship with God?

· Do you think we’re more comfortable with God in a building/box or with God living in us? Explain your response.

· Do you focus more on not screwing up with God or on living positively with/for Him? If the former, how could you make a shift to the latter?

· Titus 2:11-14 and Ephesians 2:8-10 suggest that God saved us to do good things on earth and that He even has good things prepared for us to do. What specific good things do you think God has for you to do right now?

· Jesus offered a sacrifice to pay for our sins once and for all so that we can offer every part of our lives as sacrifices to please God all of the time (See Heb 9/Rom 6). Name some parts of your life that you don’t usually think about offering to God. How could you offer these to Him in a way that honors Him?

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· When have you felt truly free & why?

· Agree/Disagree & Explain: Jesus is best known for dying.

· Read through Isaiah 53. What is your response to hearing that everything Jesus experienced as described in this chapter was “God’s Will”?

· How would you explain to someone else why Jesus’ death is vital to humanity? Different from anyone else’s?

· How would you complete this sentence? Take Jesus’ death out of the story between man & God and we’d be missing _____________________.

· What attempts have you made to deal with your own mistakes/sins in light of what happens after this life- relativism, karma, balancing the scales, keeping the law, something else? Did any of them take away your fear or guilt and leave you w/freedom?

· According to the passages above, why did God give people the OT law and sacrificial system if it couldn’t really set them free?

· What do you think/feel when you read that Jesus died for ALL people in EVERY era? (Hebrews 9:12, 1 Timothy 10:1-4)

· Have you grabbed hold of the freedom Jesus offers you? If not, what is standing in your way? If so, are you living like you are truly free?

· What settings or modes of teaching help you learn best?

· Would you agree that Jesus is a great teacher? If so, what makes Him one?

· What was your reaction to hearing about the way the Jews committed themselves to studying the scripture- memorizing the Torah by age 10 and the whole OT by 14?

· Where did Jesus say He got the insights that amazed people and the authority with which He spoke? How would this mesh in your mind with the view that Jesus was a great teacher, but not the Son of God?

· Which is more comforting to you & why: Jesus showing us God’s power, Jesus showing us God’s kindness & truth, or Jesus showing us that He understands firsthand our troubles and struggles?

· Are you taking advantage of the chance to learn from Jesus? How are you trying to live what you learn from Him?

· What is on your “no-touch” list & why? (Ex. The doorknob in public restrooms, raw meat, etc.)

· When you think about Jesus, how often do you consider the context of the “course” He lived in as a first century Jew? Do you think this is even important/helpful?

· Do you agree that many religious people end up separating themselves from those who don’t share their faith? If so, why?

· Are you surprised to see that God told the Jews to keep their distance from those who wouldn’t share or passionately keep their faith? Do you see any wisdom in it? Any potential dark sides?

· Which do you relate most to and why- being an outsider, someone who has issues, or a person who has made their fair share of mistakes?

· Which approach do you see Christians/Churches mirroring more- the Jews keeping others at arms length- or Jesus welcoming and engaging those who have been pushed away?

· In your mind, what is the significance of God stepping into our story and becoming human?

· Are you indecisive? Would those who know you well agree w/your assessment? Which is harder for you- making small, everyday decisions OR big, life-changing ones?

· In the book of Revelation, Jesus pictures Himself as moving in and among His churches/people? Do you think He still does that today? If so, what should that mean to/for church communities?

· Jesus said that He knew what these people had done. Do you agree that our actions show what we really believe? What would someone conclude you believe from how you live?

· How do you feel about Jesus’ strong response to people who played the middle?

· How would best characterize your response to Jesus right now- cold, hot or lukewarm? Why?

· Have you ever been a practical atheist- believing in God/Jesus- but handling everything on your own? If so, how do you think you ended up in that place?

· Jesus offers to meet each of the needs He points out to the Laodicean church. Do you think Jesus would be willing and able to meet your deepest needs?

· What strikes you most about the picture of Jesus standing at the door and wanting to come in and eat with you? How could you take Him up on that offer?

Do This - Not That (Week 4): Do Something- Don't Just Nod

SCRIPTURES FROM SUNDAY:

Matthew 7:21-29, 11:28-30; Luke 6:46-49

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

· Name a few things you believe (ex. flossing is important) but don’t do yourself. Why don’t you do these things?

· What’s the scariest situation you’ve ever been in? Did/could you prepare for it ahead of time? What got you through it?

· Have you ever found yourself more interested in hearing and discussing Jesus’ words than doing them? Why do you think that was?

· In Luke’s description of Jesus’ words, he talks about a person who did the hard work of excavating dirt (by hand) to reach the bedrock. Is that a good picture of the effort that is sometimes required for us to follow Jesus?

· What similarities do you see between the two builders/houses in Jesus’ simile? How about differences?

· How do you think we can stay focused on Jesus’ call to obey and follow His ways without slipping into rule-keeping or counting on our doing things to earn God’s love and favor?

· Which comes first in your opinion- believing in Jesus or doing what He taught? Is it possible that they can be inverted for some people? Feed each other?

· What can you do today to build your life on Jesus’ ways? Where do you sense Him calling you to do something that He taught?

Read Matthew chapters 5-7 this week.

• When was the last time you cleaned out some physical clutter? What motivated you to do it? How did you feel during? After?

• Have you ever felt choked or slowed down in your relationship with God before? Were you able to identify what was limiting you?

• What do you think of the picture of sin as an “entanglement”?

• Can you think of a time where something that was good or neutral (not inherently sinful) became unhealthy spiritual clutter for you and took your focus off of Jesus?

• Which is harder for you- identifying spiritual clutter or doing something about it?

• Is there anything in your life right now that is choking God’s work in you or slowing down your pursuit of Jesus?

Q: What do you think of when you think of your “roots”?

Q: What do roots do for a plant? Do you see any spiritual //’s?

Q: Have you ever heard a version of Christianity that says that God just wants a 1x response from you (i.e. get saved)? How does that track with the 2nd & good soils in Jesus’ story?

Q: Who do you think is responsible for developing our spiritual roots and depth? God? Us? Both? If we have some responsibility, what is it?

Q: What strikes you most about the multiple roots that the disciples in Acts 2 put down? Is your root system that diversified? Which of these come naturally to you? Feel like a stretch?

Q: What role do you think consistency plays in developing spiritual depth? Do you think it is likely that we will develop a thriving root system if we only seek God every now and then?

Q: If God were to draw a picture of your life with Him with a line in the middle of the page- a plant on top and roots on the bottom- what would your picture look like?

Do This Not That (Week 1)

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

Q: If you had to describe yourself as one or the other, would you say you are more open or closed to God right now? Why?

Q: Which are you more likely to succumb to- blatantly hardening your heart toward God (like in the Zechariah passage)? Or following Jesus, but being kind of dense and lacking faith or understanding (like the disciples in Mark 6)?

Q: When is the last time you said, “I know what God would say, BUT……”?

Q: Have you ever asked God to soften and open up the hard places in your heart? Identify any experiences or beliefs that have left you a bit crusty and ask for God’s help healing them and being more open to Him.

Q: Do you expect to be challenged and stretched when you explore Jesus’ ways? Does this expectation lead you to seek Him more or less?

JOY Week 3 "Finding Joy In Life's Fragile Places"

2 Corinthians 1:8-9; Psalm 127:1-2; Haggai 1:5-9; Matthew 6:31-32; Psalm 37:23-26


REFLECT/DISCUSS:

Q: When is the last time you realized that some part of your life was fragile and could fall apart? How did that feel? How did you respond?

Q: When was the last time that you found yourself seeking God urgently? Did something happen to prompt you? If so, what?

Q: What do you think is the greatest experience a person could have in this life? How do you feel about “an intimate relationship with God” as an answer? If that is your answer, does your life reflect it?

Q: Check out 2 Cor. 1:8-9. What did it take for the author to quit relying on himself and start relying on God? What will it take for you to do the same?

Q: Read the rest of the passages listed above. Do you really believe what they say about God ultimately being in control? If God is in control, does this change how we can respond to the uncertain and wobbly parts of life?

Q: If your life were pictured as a balance beam like in the teaching, what would you be doing on it? Crawling? Holding on for dear life? Swaying? Tip Toeing? Dancing? Something else?

Q: How would you respond to John Piper’s question: “Would you be happy in heaven- with all pain and tears gone- if Jesus wasn’t there?”

JOY: Joy In The Middle Of Trials


SCRIPTURES FROM SUNDAY: James 1:1-7

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:
Greetings.

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

Read verse 1-2:

Q: How does James’ call to “consider it (suffering) pure joy” make you feel? When you’re going through a difficult season, what’s your typical attitude or mindset?

Read verse 3:

Q: James explains it’s “the testing of your faith” that builds up perseverance. Can you pinpoint a time in your life when suffering developed you into a stronger person? How are you different today because of it?

Read verse 4:

Q: More than just making you a stronger person, James explains that preserving through difficult seasons – over the course of your life – will lead to spiritual maturity. How does it make you feel to know your suffering has eternal value? How does it make you look differently at suffering?

Consider Francis’ statement from the teaching:

“Joy isn’t something we just lose; it’s something we choose to give away. Joy isn’t something that just happens to us; it’s something we fight for. It’s a decision.”

Are there areas of your life where you have made the decision to give away the gift of joy? Are you focusing on the bad instead of celebrating the good? How can you begin to fight for joy in your life today?

REFLECT/DISCUSS:

Read verse 4:

Q: Have you ever thought of rejoicing as a commandment? Do you believe it is possible for you to rejoice all of the time?

Read verse 5:

Q: Instead of our anxieties and problems, check out the kinds of things God wants us to think about. How does what’s been on your mind lately compare to this list? If we are glorifying what we think about constantly- what are you glorifying right now?
